How It Works

So, what is a herd share?

As a member at Creambrook, you own a part of the milking herd, called a herd share. You get milk every week, delivered to a pick up site near you - like a milk subscription from your very own cow!

(But you don't have to wake up at 5:00 AM to milk the cows. Win-win).

What does it cost?

Members pay a one-time fee to own the share and a weekly amount per share for us to care for your cows and deliver milk to you!

Whole Share

It’s a one-time cost of $30 to purchase ownership of one whole share. You can purchase as many shares as your family desires. If you end the membership, we buy back the herd share(s) from you.

Ownership of one whole share provides you with one gallon of milk per week. 

Milk is delivered consistently every week, same amount as your share size, all year round. 

Half Share

It’s a one-time cost of $15 to purchase ownership of one half share. You can purchase as many shares as your family desires. If you end the membership, we buy back the herd share(s) from you.

Ownership of one half share provides you with one half gallon of milk per week. 

Milk is delivered consistently every week, same amount as your share size, all year round.

FAQs

  • Creambrook raw milk is sweet and fresh at least 7 - 10 days and usually 14 days. Unlike its pasteurized counterpart, milk that is raw doesn't "go bad" or rancid. It ages and sours! It's wonderful in baking and in place of buttermilk when it starts to sour.

  • Herd shares are like a weekly subscription. Milk is delivered each week and you don't need to do anything except enjoy it.

  • You can ask a friend to pick it up and enjoy it, or you may send us an email at least 7 days before the scheduled delivery. We’ll skip your delivery and you can double up your milk shares at a later delivery (hello, homemade ice cream!). You won't want to miss out on any of the delicious milk in your share!

  • A lot of people think of milk to lighten their coffee or wet their cereal, but raw milk is a superfood of nutrition! It's full of vitamins such as A and D, minerals, proteins, enzymes, and good, delicious butterfat. A cup of raw milk in your day would use up a half gallon each week and you can easily enjoy all the benefits.

  • Our on-farm lab has two separate tests: one test is the coliform count, which shows the number of coliform colonies that are in 1 ml of milk, if any, and the other is APC (aerobic plate count) which indicates the cleanliness of our milking equipment, essentially showing the shelf life of the milk.

    The lab can't show us if there are specific strains of coliform, like e. coli or listeria, but if the coliform count is above standard, that could indicate an issue that needs to be addressed.

    If the APC count is high it means that the milk has the capacity to grow bacteria whether good or bad and it would sour more quickly.

    We have voluntarily chosen to follow the same standards as licensed Pennsylvania raw milk dairies, so that is why we chose these lab tests. The milk has to test as clean as pasteurized milk. For well over three years we have had incredibly clean lab tests that are well below the standard limit.

    To take it a step further, we are members of RAWMI, the Raw Milk Institute, the global leader in raw milk production, education, and safety. Because we are a RAWMI listed farm, we have accountability with their leadership, submit regular lab results, have access to more raw milk education, and keep up to date on raw milk safety and handling.

  • Our Jersey cows at Creambrook Farm live outdoors on pasture 365 days a year, enjoying a daily fresh serving of grass during the growing season and stored grass during the winter. All of our feed is 100% non-GMO. Grass is at the center of everything we do, giving our milk its unique flavor and excellent nutrition.

  • We have a wonderful veterinarian who helps us to figure out the best natural remedy if a cow becomes ill. Antibiotics have very rare use on our farm, and are only used to save an animal if other natural treatments haven’t worked. If a milk cow is treated with antibiotics, her milk is kept separate from the herd share milk and discarded for the appropriate amount of time.
